Canterbury Tales Essay


In Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales there are about thirty characters a small hand full
good, but most of therm either liars, stealers, or plain bad. This essay will explain a bad
character, then a good character then once again a bad character. Through the use of
Chaucer’s characterization of each person the following characters will be described,
The Pardoner, The Parson, and The Nun.


The Pardoner’s job is to find people who need confessions and a pardon of there
sins, then collect the payment. Chaucer gives detail on why the Pardoner is bad by saying
that he has holy relics but they are knock offs. The Pardoner also shows off these
“holy relics” and gets money as well from people that he shows it to. He is also a great
story teller shown in “The Pardoner’s Tale” but his story is also about corruption just like
he is. This is why he is characterized as a bad character.


The Parson is a poor priest he choose to give up his wealth to be poor. For this
character Chaucer gives him virtuous characteristics like he does not ask for donations to
the church because he knows that his people need it more than the church does.
The Parson practices what he teaches, so when he sais help the poor he also helps the poor.
Also in bad weather he walks to the needy people’s houses to help them. These actions
make him good.


The Nun does not act like a nun at all. She is a skanky low dirt hoe (as Mrs. Wargo
sais) She is having an affair with the Monk. She acts like the nicest person but underneath
it all she is a bad person, she acts like she has manners but she eats like a fat pig. She also
has dogs that she cares for more than the people that she is supposed to care for. This is why
she is a bad character.


As you can see by the actions and details that these people put them in ether a
good or a bad section. The Pardoner lies and steals money makes him bad. The Parson
gives money to the needy and also helps them. And The Nun is a selfish person who cares
about nothing more than her self and her dogs.
